On the 10 of July 2008, there was a Recital by Dr. Shershah Syed from his new book, “Dil Hae Daagh Daagh” at “The Second Floor” (http://www.t2f.biz).

“Dr. Shershah Syed, a distinguished surgeon and social activist, has turned to the short story with a unique passion. Six collections of stories have won him strong reviews from leading writers and the admiration of many readers”.

“The Second Floor (T2F) is a community platform for open dialogue featuring a coffeehouse, events space, bookshop, and exhibition gallery. T2F also provides citizens with a platform for social change through rich cultural activities, public discourse, and activism using the new media.”

“Coffeehouse tradition is all about sparking conversations - and we’re (T2F) passionate about providing a platform for people to engage with each other. Through regular events such as poetry readings, book signings, workshops, talks, debates, film screenings, unplugged music sessions, and stand-up comedy, we hope to get people to think, question, and take action.”

On entering T2F, one would notice the vibrant colors of life surrounding oneself, an amazing aroma of the coffee and its friendly staff so happy about the place that one could not remain untouched by it.

T2F is a unique place to hangout and enjoy with a variety of magazines setup on each table along with a set of board game on every table each different from the other. But the thing I liked the most was the bargain books at the enterance and a copy of “The Amended Constitution” hanging from the ceiling demonstrating the richness of intellectual dialogue and the tolerance of open forum!

I visited "The Second Floor" for the first time to attend the recital of Dr. SherShah Syed. The recital started with an announcement of Sabeen, the Director and the person driving this wonderful place followed by an introduction of Dr. Shershah Syed by Mr. Asif.

Dr. Shershah read from one of his books a story about a young lady who had a car accident in Karachi with an influential person of a Sindhi Shah family. It goes on further that the Shah was actually interested in lady due to which he was extra generous about the accident and ultimately asks for her hand from her father. The Shah being married twice before, Dr. Shershah writes, that the marriage was just to a way to conceal, to gratify and satisfy the primal desires of Shah in a respectful manner. The father of the lady is outraged by this event but there is little he can do against a powerful and influential Shah. The story continues of the struggle, the joys and the fears of the lady. The story is very disturbing but feels as if something we hear every now and then about a powerful person and the vulnerability of a woman.

The recital was followed by Q&A by many of his fans. Some asking about medical reasons why there was so much violence against women from low income group. What about the violence against women from the high income group? Some were interested in knowing about the social injustices to the women in our society? Some interested in knowing the literary value of Dr. Shershah’s work.

The good thing is that Dr. Shershah does not believe in putting in “literary” value in his story and neither do his publishers. He writes because he is touched by them and feels the need to write about them and share it with us.

My friend, Arj, asks Dr. Shershah that in all his story there is a feeling of helplessness of women and can’t there be some stories written giving hope to the reader? Dr. Shershah responds that he does not see hope so clearly and also that women tend to do so much for others as mother, sister and wife that she does not think or do anything for herself.

I asked Dr. Shershah why every title of his book had “DIL” (HEART) in it? Dr. Shershah answered that he liked “DIL” (HEART). I feel that his stories have had an impact on his heart so to have made him write it out and so they come from his heart. I further feel that all the title of his books depict the state of a pure heart and the feelings experienced by Dr. Shershah towards our society. A friend of Dr. Shershah has collected, if I remember correctly, some 5,000 ash-aars for Dr. Shershah so that he may choose one for his next book. I certainly hope and wish that he uses many more from that list.

Dr. Shershah Syed then signed his books for his fans and give a brief interview to a TV channel and we came back happy meeting a person who feels the pain of the women, the entity, whom only we respect, we cherish but never see her weaker side, her sufferings or her sacrifices.

May Allah;
“grant us the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.”
